Kathryn Rollins is an artistic soul who creates music with emotional rawness and refreshing honesty. With the release of her debut EP, Reckless, a high profile television sync and signing to ABC Music, 2013 will be the year Kathryn solidifies her place on the Australian music landscape.
Kathryn’s Reckless EP sees musician and fellow West Australian, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe, Basement Birds) step into the Producer’s seat, with the creative duo spending many hours experimenting with different production styles and arrangements to find the right sound. The result is a debut EP that features four seductive tracks about vulnerability & desire, beautifully showcasing Kathryn’s prolific songwriting skills and haunting vocals.
Licensed through ABC Music/Universal, Kathryn Rollins calls Dirt Diamond Productions home. After meeting in 2008, Kathryn was Kav’s first personal signing to the label.
The Reckless EP is a mix of old and new. The songs span over four years of emotional growth for the Melbourne-based songstress, beginning at the age of 18 through to 21. Title track and second single ‘Reckless’ was penned by Kathryn when only 18 years old;
“For me it epitomises that period of your life as a teenage girl where you inevitably struggle with self-doubt, self-control and a lack of confidence. The character in the story is obsessed with someone and sure of her love for them, but is also aware of how damaging her actions can be when she’s overwhelmed by emotion”.
‘Reckles’s follows on from Kathryn’s debut single ‘Who Shot The Bird Down?’ Released in late 2012, ‘Who Shot The Bird Down?’ draws the listener in through Kathryn’s powerful yet delicate vocals, and has been described as “ a voice that comes halfway from heaven and halfway from hell”. The track will appear in the forthcoming Australian series, Wentworth - the highly anticipated reimaging of the well-known 1980’s Australian television drama ‘Prisoner’, which will air on Channel 10 from May 2013.
The EP was recorded at The Wasteland in Fremantle with the exception of 'Cold Water' which was recorded at the beautiful Fremantle Arts Centre. All tracks were mixed by Dave Parkin (Snowman/Jebediah/The Ghost Hotel) at Blackbird Studios.
Compared to the likes of PJ Harvey & Fiest, Kathryn Rollins will be one to watch in 2013.
To celebrate her debut release, Kathryn will be touring the EP this May at the following intimate venues:
EP TOUR DATES
May 3rd - Brighton Up Bar, Sydney
May 4th - Southside Tea Room, Brisbane
May 9th - Grace Darling Hotel, Melbourne
