Audiences will have the unique opportunity to see this stunning genre-defying musical on the big screen when The Boy Castaways opens in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth from 28 November.
Created by some of Australia’s brightest lights of theatre, music and film – including Tim Rogers, Paul Capsis, Megan Washington and Mark Leonard Winter – and with remarkable music direction from Boom Crash Opera’s Peter Farnan recalling the songs of the past and the present, the film is a haunting ode to the precarious magic of the stage and the soul-shaping power of music.
‘The Boy Castaways Soundtrack’, a collection of 21 original songs from the film, is released today and is available digitally and in-stores nationally.
Esteemed Australian theatre director Michael Kantor steps behind the camera for the first time to tell a story born of the theatre but intrinsically cinematic. It poses the question: what happens when the stage becomes your world? In pursuit of the answer four men are drawn into a metaphysical thriller, a grand cabaret of the soul.
Four drifters find themselves lured into a vast Playhouse, deep in the heart of the city. Taken in hand by the enigmatic leading lady (Washington), the men are plunged ever deeper into a labyrinth of jealousy, betrayal, violence and passion, dissolving the lines between desire and death.
Director Michael Kantor says of the film, “I wanted to capture the allure, excitement and madness of the stage, and in particular, its dangerous side: a theatre that devours its actors.
“The film’s heart rests in the stories of these four men, entrapped by the theatre as both a physical and metaphysical space, all of them adrift in a sea of narcissism, loneliness and existential melancholia. They discover their overarching, deeply hidden desires on the stage. Each needs this platform to transcend their disillusionment and to discover a sense of completion, however fleeting it may be.”
Commissioned by The Adelaide Film Festival, ABC Arts, and The Australia Council for The Arts through the Hive Fund, with additional support from The South Australian Film Commission, the film is produced by Jo Dyer (The Turning, Lucky Miles) and Stephen Armstrong with executive producer Robert Connolly (The Turning, Balibo).
The Boy Castaways will have its world premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Sunday October 13 and will screen with a special live performance by the cast at the Melbourne Festival on Tuesday October 15. The film will screen on ABC TV next year.
