She was known as ‘the little girl who grew up too soon’ but for all the personal tragedy behind her meteoric rise to fame, Judy Garland became the voice of the twentieth century.
From the moment she played Dorothy in the film of The Wizard of Oz in 1939, the star of 40 feature films became a household name, with ‘Over the Rainbow’, composed by Harold Arlen, becoming her signature tune.
But no matter what music she was singing, Garland always brought something special to her performances, amply justifying her famous comment: ‘I really mean every word of every song I sing.’
From ‘Swanee’ through ‘That Old Black Magic’ and on to ‘The Trolley Song’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, this definitive Judy Garland collection includes all her greatest hits, reviving memories of a star whose life was as spectacular and dramatic as her own emotion-charged vocal style.
After five marriages, Judy Garland passed away in 1969, aged just 47. As one mourner commented at her funeral, ‘She just plain wore out,’ leaving behind a recorded legacy that continues to dazzle listeners of a new generation with her blazing talent whose equal has never been known since.
